About
Ten years in technology support, seven of them owning an IT function alone. Based in Michigan. The short version is on the home page. This is the longer one.
The building
The restaurant and retail operation I support is open 364 days a year: three kitchens, three dining rooms, conference space, six retail shops, and a food truck. About 120 users, most of them front-of-house and retail staff who are not at a desk.
How I got here
- 2013 to 2016
- Helpdesk at a regional ISP, supporting fixed-wireless and fiber subscribers by phone with no onsite access and no control over their hardware. Promoted to third-shift NOC, staging and configuring access points and controllers for business installs.
- 2016 to 2019
- Hospitality management at a 360-room hotel and resort. Three supervisory roles across front desk, bar, and hotel operations.
- 2019 to now
- Sole IT for the restaurant and retail operation.
- Education
- Network Administration AAS, continuing toward a BSIT.
Beyond the home page
Active Directory, Group Policy, and Exchange administration. Rebuilt the inherited AD groups into a standard naming convention with domain-local nesting so access follows least privilege. Migrated about 80 mailboxes from on-premises Exchange to Microsoft 365. License renewals and vendor relationships, including off-hours calls with an overseas vendor.
Who I work with
I report to non-technical leadership, and nearly everyone I support is on their feet during a shift, not at a desk reading a ticket update. Most of the job is explaining technical constraints in terms that let people get on with their work.
